FEBRUARY fog on the first tee and below-zero temperatures did not dampen spirits at the captains’ drive-in at Hawkstone Park Golf Club.

Driving into office in front of a large crowd of supporters were men’s captain  Ashley Burdock and ladies’ captain Sharon Jones, both of Whitchurch; seniors’ captain Dave Samuel of Shrewsbury; and junior captain Carys Tune of Prees.

The captains were introduced by the club’s new president, Dave Ralphs.

A Texas Scramble competition followed the drive-in, which was won by four-ball Tim Jones, Molly Moore, Hugh Vaughan and Nigel Ross.

Following the competition, members officially welcomed the new captains at a celebration in the clubhouse.

There, Ashley Burdock paid tribute to close friend and golfing partner Andrew Porter, who died suddenly last month. He said Andrew’s passing was a very sad loss to the club and highlighted his exemplary professionalism and his commitment to and love of the game.

Ashley also said that Hawkstone was a welcoming and family club and he asked for everyone to enjoy the game. He also thanked long-serving committee member  Alan Walker, who recently stepped down after an outstanding 46 years’ service to the club; and retiring committee member Jane Lloyd, who along with husband Don, organised and supported the club’s junior section for many years.
