Fire engines from Wem, Prees and Whitchurch were sent to the incident which happened between Grindley Brook and Tarporley roundabout near the whitchurch Bypass.
Police were also in attendance.
There were no injuries to anyone involved.
Spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Jim Barker said: "We were called at 2:01am with reports of a HGV on fire.
"The vehicle was empty as it was on its way back from Shrewsbury.
"On the way back, the driver noticed a loss of power and stepped out of the vehicle to find there was a fire by the engine.
"It is believed that the fire was caused by a fault in the engine.
"Luckily, the roads were quiet so there wasn't much disruption caused, and the fire was put out after around 35 to 40 minutes, before the police could arrange the recovery of the vehicle.
"The fire had completely gutted the cab and rear of the vehicle."
