COUNCILLORS in Wem are to raise the possibility of a community project to restore a vandalised toilet block at the town meeting next week.

Shropshire councillor Pauline Dee (right) told her fellow town councillors at last week’s meeting that she had asked a representative from Men in Sheds if they would be interested in taking on a project to restore the toilets in the Rec Ground.

Cllr Dee believes a community-funded project could potentially receive greater funding than a town council initiative, but said the council would support it.

She added: “We want positivity around it, and I would like to put it forward. Community groups are more likely to get funding.

“Councillors would support it and it’s possible Men in Sheds from all around the area could come forward to help. Getting the community to support a project could see it being left alone.

“We can discuss it after the meeting on March 9 and we could put it on Facebook. Once it’s publicised, and with the backing of the council, it can move forward.”

Meanwhile, in other items discussed, it was agreed to write to Royal Mail and ask for Shrewsbury to be taken off Wem’s official addresses, possibly with the creation of a new postcode, owing to confusion for residents.

Councillors also agreed to act on a request to discover why some residents around the town have struggled to get insurance for their properties.
