THE CHOLMONDELEY Arms has been voted the “Best Pub in the North West” at the prestigious Pub and Bar Magazine Awards at BAFTA in London.

The pub, located on Lord Cholmondeley’s estate next to Cholmondeley Castle gardens, re-opened in 2011 after a period of significant restoration work on this famous, former 19th-century Victorian school house, by Cheshire pub entrepreneurs Tim Bird and Mary Mclaughlin.

Mr Bird was delighted with the award, especially as he is no stranger to such competition success.

“To be ‘Best Pub in the North West’ is a substantial achievement and reflects all the hard work and dedication our team put into the pub on a daily basis,” he said.

“Having won the same award

for one of our other pubs, the Church Inn in Mobberley, last year, we’re proud to have done the double!”

The judges were impressed with the pub’s food act, particularly the seasonal menu and the excellent dishes cooked by head chef Tom Richards and his team.

The now-famous drinks act  was also recognised with the Cholmondeley Arms being Cheshire’s first real Gin Palace, offering 366 different gins and its famous July Gin Fest.

The atmosphere of the pub created by manager Tim Moody and his team and the friendly nature of everyone really stood out.

Mr Bird and Ms McLaughlin operate seven country pubs, five in Cheshire, one in Dorset and one in Staffordshire – the Fitzherbert Arms, which won the award for the best pub in that county.

The group has had an extraordinarily successful year, opening two new establishments and receiving a flurry of awards including Best Food Offer in the UK, Best Pub Group in the UK, as well as being recognised in the Northern Bar and Restaurants Top 50 hospitality companies across the North of England.
