WHITCHURCH’S TV vet Steve Leonard, who helped open Alderford Lake last week as guest of honour, has lamented the need for the re-branding in the first place.

Mr Leonard joined owner Rob Bebbington and Shropshire councillor Peggy Mullock to cut the ribbon on the banks of the lake in Tilstock Road last Wednesday.

And he admitted he was delighted to be asked, as a long-time user of the lake, but expressed some minor disappointment that his choice of ‘Lakey McLakeface’ wasn’t taken up!

“It’s a fantastic place – to go through this is such a shame,” said Steve, from Leonard Brothers in Whitchurch.

“They have worked hard to build up a business of this quality and now they have to re-educate people on the name and what it means.

“People aren’t going to find the new name easily online in the same way.

“But to see so many people here today shows how the lake is thought of and liked in the town and it will be good going forward.”

He added: “I’m delighted to be asked to help Alderford re-brand and re-launch.

“I love spending time down there. The lake and surrounding landscape is a great asset to Whitchurch. Rob, Lynn and the rest of the team have worked so hard to make it a serene spot for coffee and a walk, and also an oasis for wildlife.”

The name change came after a trademark row, but Mr Bebbington has stated he wants to turn a negative into a positive.

A £20-a-year membership scheme is to be launched with plenty of offers for members of events, including an open-air viewing of Jurassic Park and Jaws on August 4-5.
