A WOMAN in Whitchurch who celebrated her 100th birthday recently received a VIP bouquet of flowers from the town’s Mayor.

Ethel Jones, of 7 St Johns Park, celebrated her centenary on July 6 and enjoyed an open house for her friends and family all day.

Councillor Tony Neville was among the visitors when he called in with some flowers which delighted Ethel, according to her son, Richard.

He said: “She was over the moon when Whitchurch Mayor, Tony Neville called in to wish her a happy birthday with a bouquet of flowers.

“She originates from Audley in Staffordshire, but moved with her family to Fenns Bank in 1933, when she was 16, and her father managed Fenns Bank brickworks.

“She then moved to Whitchurch with her husband and family in 1945 and has spent the rest of her life here, raising her family and working, as many readers will remember, at Astons furniture store for many years.

“Since moving to St John’s Park in 1992 she has been an active member of U3A enjoying playing chess and canasta, making firm friends, many of whom visited her on her ‘big day’.”
