Lindsay Margaret James -The funeral of Lindsay Margaret James took place at Christ Church

Published on 23/07/2013

Lindsay Margaret James -
The funeral of Lindsay Margaret James took place at Christ Church, Rhydycroesau on 18th April, followed by a private cremation. Lindsay's wish was that her ashes be scattered in the garden she loved and where she had worked so hard.

The Rev Canon David Crowhurst who had married Lindsay and David at Christ Church in 1994 and who also baptised Tom in 1999 conducted the service.

Lindsay was the daughter of Beryl Richards (nee Gauge) and the late Graham Richards and sister to Martin. She grew up in Maesbury, was educated at Maesbury County School and Oswestry Girls High School. Her ambition, from her first days in school, had always been to teach, and she did her teacher training at Cardiff University's School of Home Economics at Llandaff.

Lindsay's first teaching post was at Ham, Richmond, Surrey. She came back to Oswestry to run the Home Economics Department at Oswestry College at the time comprehensive education came to Oswestry.

After several years lecturing at Oswestry College she moved to the Administration side of Education and, based at the Shirehall in Shrewsbury, became involved in the training of school Governors throughout Shropshire. When Wrekin Unitary Authority came into being Lindsay moved to Telford as an Educational Administrator and Regeneration Project Manager, where she remained until she took early retirement in 2010.

Lindsay's effectiveness as an education administrator, manager, team leader and motivator of people is evident in the enormous number of tributes received from her colleagues to her forward thinking, planning, drive and ability to inspire people. She organised the visits of Princess Diana, David Blunkett, Estelle Morris and The Queen as well as organising the launch of the New Unitary Authority in 1998. Lindsay was totally loyal to her staff, her colleagues and her friends and was always kind and caring.

She was a wonderful cook, a very keen gardener and homemaker and also a great fan of Test Cricket and The Six Nations Rugby.

Lindsay's positive and very courageous attitude throughout her illness was an inspiration to all her family and friends.

Chief mourners were David James, Husband, Tom James, Son, Beryl Richards, Mother, Martin and Brenda Richards, Brother and Sister in Law, David and June Richards, Uncle and Aunt, Mrs Margaret Manning, Aunt, Nicholas Woodlock, Steven Richards and Tim Richards, Cousins also representing other members of the family unable to attend. Mr and Mrs R W James, Parents in Law.

Many colleagues from Shropshire and Wrekin Education Authorities were present, and a very large number of friends and former colleagues, too numerous to mention individually, had come from many parts of the country.

There were family flowers only. Donations were invited for Cancer Research UK and well over £2000 has been received.

David and Tom, Beryl and Martin, sincerely thank everyone for the many letters and cards they have received at this very sad time. The wonderful tributes received have been a great comfort to us. Thanks are also extended to the members of Christ Church Rhydycroesau for their great help and support in so many ways, including flowers for the church and provision of the refreshments. We also thank the Rev Canon David Crowhurst for conducting the service. The organist was Jane Fineron and we are grateful to her too for the music. Thanks also to the staff of David Davies & Sons who are unfailingly very kind, understanding, helpful and efficient.
