The funeral has taken place of Mrs Barbara May Elder who lived at Muirfield, Oswestry and died at The Severn Hospice, Shrewsbury on Saturday March 2nd 2013 aged 76 years. She leaves husband Dr Michael Elder, daughter Judith Ann and son Mark Alexander.
Barbara became a State Registered Nurse (SRN) in July 1958 having trained at West Herts and St Paul's Hospitals, Hemal Hempstead. 1958-59 Staff nurse (Private Ward) and then Junior Night Sister at West Herts and St Paul's. 1959 following her marriage she was a Staff Nurse for three months at Greenfields Hospital for the elderly infirm, Morda, Nr Oswestry. 1960-62 Civilian Nursing Sister at the British Military Hospital, Munster, Westphalia, Germany. 1973 Community Nursing Sister for then the recently formed emergency, evening and night service for the North Shropshire area, based at Oswestry Clinic, Victoria Road, Oswestry. 1983 Staff Nurse at Day Hospital, Shropshire Orthopaedic Hospital, Gobowen. 1985 Ward Sister at the Geriatric Unit at Shropshire Orthopaedic Hospital, Gobowen. Subsequently Nursing Sister at Vyrnwy Nursing Home, Llansantffraid until her reluctant retirement in the early 90's. Barabara was elected Lady Captain of Oswestry Golf Club in 1979 and she was a devotee of classical music.
The funeral service at St Oswald's Parish Church, Oswestry was conducted by Rev. Simon Thorburn. Burial was at Oswestry Cemetery. Family mourners were Dr Michael Elder - husband, Dr Eddie McHugh & Mrs Judith McHugh - son in law and daughter, Miss Amelia McHugh and Miss Helena McHugh - granddaughters, Mr Mark Elder -son and Mrs Gillian Elder- daughter in law, Miss Susan Elder - niece, Mrs Wendy Cherrington - niece and her husband Mr Peter Cherrington and their daughter Mrs Samantha Teare.
Thanks to all who attended the funeral, or else sent letters of sympathy, and for generous donations. After late donations from friends overseas, we have been able to donate in excess of £2,700 to the Severn Hospice in memory of Barbara.
