A COUPLE from Whitchurch say strong family ties are the key to a long marriage, as they celebrate their diamond anniversary.
Ronald and Elaine Smith, of Hillewood Avenue, recently celebrated 60 years of happy marriage, receiving a letter from the Queen.
When asked on the secret to a long lasting marriage, Ronald and Elaine, aged 81 and 78 respectively, joked they they had their ups and downs, but that their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a driving force.
"We've had our ups and downs," said Elaine.
"But we have been glued together by our grandchildren."
The couple have lived in various locations around Whitchurch in their years together, starting in Calverhall, before moving to Adgen and then spending 25 years living in Bradley before moving to Whitchurch.
Elaine spent much of her life working at Wagstaffes in Whitchurch, while Ronald says he has always worked as a farmer.
It was planed for the couple to get married on May 13, 1961, on Elaine's 18th birthday, but her mother suggested getting married a few days later, believing 13 to potentially be an unlucky date.
This clearly proved to be sage advice, as Elaine explains.
"Mum wouldn't let us get married on the 13th as she thought it was unlucky," said Elaine.
"I think it is so wonderful to receive a card from the Queen,
"My mum and dad actually celebrated their diamond anniversary as well, so they also received a card."
