WHITCHURCH hit back from an early setback to claim a battling 22-15 victory at home to Worcester in Midlands One West

The visitors raced ahead with an early penalty before increasing their lead with a converted try to establish a 10 point lead.

The Edgeley Park men began to grind out territory and finally saw Steve Bloore perform his usual appearance at the back of a maul and go over for Whitchurch's first try.

Whitchurch bid to make the most of the strong wind after the break and levelled when Mike Oakden broke through the lineout and set Jake Rees on a wonderful 30 metre run before releasing to Nathan Horton to score.

However Worcester went ahead again after a series of inexplicable penalties drove Whitchurch back and allowed them to score wide out.

Worcester grew in confidence but the highlight of the match came when Jake Dodwell tore through the visiting defence to cross for a memorable try as Whitchurch hit back to level.

The game became an arm wrestle that looked as if it would peter out and end in a draw but Whitchurch produced a great period of rugby which culminated in Bloore finishing off a wonderful passing move to cross for a try which Danny Nicholas converted.

Coach Noel Speed said: "We made it hard for ourselves and suffered a few injuries but the spirit in the side pulled through."

Whitchurch make the trip to Hereford on Saturday.

Meanwhile the club's second string beat Newcastle 56-0 in the NOWIRUL The Right Broker Division Three South.
