A STUDENT from Penley has won a place to study in Cambridge University.

A-level student Joe Williams, 18, attended Maelor School in Penley and is a student in Coleg Cambria, Yale.

Joe will study linguistics at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge on completing his A-Levels in French, English language and media and AS Level Welsh second language.

Joe said he wants to become a lecturer and researcher in linguistics and thanked Coleg Cambria for its support.

He said: "Coleg Cambria have been really supportive ever since I arrived, and I have received great advice and encouragement throughout the application and interview processes

"The team definitely made it a lot less scary for me, which I am very grateful for.

"I have always liked Cambridge as a city but never saw myself fitting in as a student there until recently, when I visited on a whim and found it is a lot more of a diverse and friendly environment than I expected, which was something very important in my decision to apply there.

Joe will be joined at Oxbridge by two other Coleg Cambria students, Megan Kocker and Cadence Thompson.

Megan will study law in Selwyn College, Cambridge and Cadence will study Japanese studies in Oxford.

Simon Woodward, assistant principal and head of Yale Sixth Form called them an inspiration.

He said: "All three are an inspiration and have worked so hard to get to this point.

"We are very proud of them and also of the incredible team here at Yale who do all they can to ensure the learners have the very best opportunity to follow their chosen career path."
