FIREFIGHTERS in north Shropshire have been recognised for their contribution to society.

The crew from Prees Fire Station, led by Jeremy Chambers, were presented with the High Sheriff of Shropshire's Good Citizen Award at the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service's (SFRS) long service and good conduct awards earlier this week.

The award received by the north Shropshire crew is specifically for those who have made a substantial contribution to society.

They were recognised for maintaining emergency response availability throughout a period of staff shortages.

The awards at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury were attended by the chief fire officer for SFRS, Rod Hammerton and the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Anna Turner, who both praised those who received awards for their service in the county.

Mr Hammerton said: "Working with fantastic people like the ones we have recognised tonight is the reason I can honestly say that in 30 years of service I have never had a day I didn’t want to come to work."

Mrs Turner added: "It’s always an honour and a privilege to meet people like yourselves and convey the appreciation of the people of Shropshire for all that you do."

Honoured on the night were 10 recipients of the long service and good conduct, presented to employees in recognition of 20 years of exemplary service.
