COUNCILLORS are expected to further oppose plans to build six bungalows on land close to a Wem town centre car park at a monthly meeting on Thursday.

The developer, Morris & Company wants to build six bungalows on land by Central Car Park near Aston Street and the application was submitted on Thursday November 10 and will be discussed in the meeting which will take place on Thursday, November 24 in Edinburgh House.

According to a design and access statement submitted to Shropshire Council, the proposal will provide 'additional and cheaper housing'.

It added: "The proposal provides additional lower-cost open market housing on a site which is 'in transition' between the commercial centre and adjoining residential areas, and which has low-impact and good neighbour uses adjoining.

"It has been designed to follow the more modern style of buildings which dominate the surrounding area.

"It will have no adverse impact on the character or appearance of the surrounding area, but rather will add to the appropriate range of uses on the edge of the town centre."

Wem Town Council has voiced its opposition to this proposal citing concerns over traffic.

Penny O'Hagan, town clerk, said: "Wem Town Council objects to this application for the following reasons.

"The proposed site is not an appropriate location for residential development and the site should be retained for commercial/ business use.

"The proposal for six bungalows is excessive for the size of the site.

"The town council is concerned about the impact the development will have on highways safety grounds as the proposed access route already serves a large car park and supermarket and will bring additional traffic into an already very busy area."

Further planning applications are expected to be discussed by the town council in the meeting.

Wem Christmas Lights and Festival will be discussed with the town council considering an application for use of the town council's premises licence and a discussion about the future of it.

Members of the public will be given an opportunity to speak and express views and raise any concerns with the town council.

The meeting will end with councillors being given the opportunity to bring up issues to be put on the next agenda.

The public meeting will end and the town council will hold its confidential session.
