CONFUSION reigns over a businessman's attempts to legally dump his waste in Wrexham – because his home is in Shropshire.

Barry Charman lives in Whixall but runs his Aga and Rayburn cooker spares business in Penley in Wrexham County Borough, and went to the recycling centre in the Wrexham Industrial Estate to properly dispose of unwanted waste.

But when he arrived he was told he had to take it elsewhere because he is not a resident of Wrexham.

Since then the Herald has been told by the council that no trade waste is permitted at the recycling centre, while Mr Charman has been informed the issue is because he is not a resident of the borough.

The businessman has used the site regularly for the last 13 years, and has now criticised the 'ridiculous policy', saying it encourages fly-tipping from less scrupulous business owners.

"I went to go and take some stuff down there like I have done many times before and the man on the gate asked if I had any identification," he said.

"I showed it to him and he said I could not drop anything off because you are not a resident of Wrexham.

"I said that is the first time I have come across that one. I went on their website and sure enough, that is what is says.

"I thought that is not really on because I pay rates to Wrexham Council as a businessman here.

OTHER NEWS:

"It strikes me as a ridiculous policy because they tell us not to do fly-tipping but they are actively discouraging people from going to tip."

The closest site for Mr Charman on the English side of the border is in Whitchurch, but he said he preferred using the site in Wrexham

He added: "We don’t have any collection here from Wrexham Council. It is not really on that you can’t take your business rubbish up there.

"The one in Whitchurch on the industrial estate is fine, but why should I take Welsh rubbish to England?"

Mr Charman said he had written to the council to object, but was told household waste was for Wrexham council taxpayers only.

He said: "They replied and basically said what was on the website."

Wrexham County Borough Council was asked for comment.

A spokesperson said: "We don’t accept commercial waste at our Household Recycling Centres, as these facilities are for domestic waste and recycling only.

"Businesses in the county borough can apply for a trade waste account with the council, where they receive a 1,400 litre bin and the waste is collected from their premises.

"There is a charge for this service.

"Only residents who live in the county borough can use our Household Recycling Centres for their domestic waste.

"People who live outside the county borough must use the facilities provided by their own local authority."
