THE organisers of charity wheelbarrow race in Wem have hailed the event after it raised hundreds of pounds for a community bus service.
The wheelbarrow race took place in the town on Sunday, December 18 to raise money for North Salop Wheelers.
The event usually raises £300, but so far £511 have been raised and event organiser, Sue Holliday was delighted with the generosity shown by people in the town.
She said: "It went exceptionally well.
"We did very well on the raffle and had a hamper donated by the Co-op.
"We did a bottle raffle for each pub. We had a generous donation of £50 from the landlord of the Castle.
"People are very generous, I have just picked up another £10 donation just now."
The organisers were motivated to support North Salop Wheelers because of the support it provides for many people in the town.
She said: "It is important for country folk who are not on a bus route and people who want to organise something.
"This is a free service and it relies solely on donations.
"We also raised £300 in the summer with our scarecrow trail and that went towards it.
"We have raised over £800 this year for it so I hope it will help them."
The event organiser confirmed plenty of people in Wem turned up to see the event and was pleased with the turn up.
She said: "It was a very cold and wet day.
"The rain held off quite nicely and got heavier when everybody had got to the last pub.
"17 out of 20 people who entered turned up.
"We had costumes of all different shapes, sizes and colours. For 17 people to turn up on a cold and wet day was very good."
The winners, Will Maddex and Tommy O'Flaherty completed the circuit in 25 minutes.
Sue confirmed the wheelbarrow race will be taking place next winter and a scarecrow trail will be taking place in the summer next year and is pleased with how the events have gone.
She said: "We just concentrate on those two really.
"There are eight of us, four couples. We always used to have things on years ago and we felt it was time to do something.
"This all came about from there really. Somebody suggested to us to put a scarecrow trail on in Wem and this was perfect for us.
"This is the third one and it is going from strength to strength."
