A NEW Whitchurch town councillor has said he is looking forward to serving the community.

John Morris will be the new member for the town's West Ward and was officially welcomed by Whitchurch Town Council during its monthly meeting on Thursday, January 19.

Councillor Morris served in the British army and went on to work as a lorry driver for 26 years before retiring.

He said: "I left home at 16 and joined the army. I have been to Germany, Norway and Canada.

"As I was due to leave my sister moved to Whitchurch. By the time I left the army, I moved to Whitchurch.

"I worked for 26 years as a lorry driver before I retired.

"I wanted to get stuck into the community and I am committed to the town."

Cllr Morris received a warm welcome from other councillors.

Whitchurch mayor Cllr Andy Hall said: "I have been informed by the town clerk that Mr Morris meets all the criteria to become a Whitchurch Town Council councillor.

"You meet all the criteria.

"Welcome on board."

Town clerk, Mike McDonald added: "Following our full council meeting we are delighted to welcome John Morhn Morris as your new town councillor for the West Ward.

"Welcome to the team John."
