A COMMUNITY group near Wem is pleased to have held a positive session after it held a meeting concerning the future of a much loved community pub.

The Friends of the Horse and Jockey held its meeting in Northwood Chapel on Thursday, February 16 and the group discussed and put forward ideas about how it could save the Horse and Jockey.

The group was set up after the pub's previous landlords closed the pub due to rising costs.

It was well attended and group member Louise Paton was pleased with the turnout.

She explained: "It was very successful and we had a great turnout.

"Excellent discussions took place after the presentation.

"There were lots of good quality questions. Hopefully, we were able to answer them all."

Louise added the group received a strong turnout at one of their fundraising events.

She said: "We also had an excellent turnout for the quiz we held last week in Bettisfield Village Hall which was a fundraising quiz for the Horse and Jockey.

"It was incredibly well supported.

"We were aiming to raise about £200, but we raised over £500 just in the evening."

The group has been receiving more pledges of financial support as a result of the quiz.

The group had intially been nervous over whether it was going to receive a good turnout in the evening.

Louise said: "We were a little bit nervous.

"There is always the chance people are busy doing something else.

"We were overwhelmed by the support from Bettisfield and really heartened by the positive comments which came back from the evening."

The current asking price for the pub is £395,000 and the group has received pledges of £50,000.

Louise said: "We are having our meeting next week where we will put together a calender of events.

"We have two firm dates in the calender.

"We have a date in May for a tractor run to raise funds for the Horse and Jockey.

"We have also got another quiz night in March in Whixall Village Hall.

"We are also hoping to put forward a Coronation Day event which will be to celebrate of King Charles, but also to raised funds.

"There will be lots of ideas and we will be having a meeting next week."
