Shropshire: Play celebrating female working class history in Wem

Writer and comedian, Ruth E Cockburn, will be putting on her play Miss Nobodies in Wem Town Hall in High Street on Thursday, March 16.

The play is based on the Ethel Carnie Holdsworth novel 'Miss Nobodies' which was the first ever play written by a female author from a working class background.

An Arts Alive spokesperson said: "Arts Alive is bringing Miss Nobodies, a two-hander play that takes the audience through the history of the last 100 years of a Lancashire town, to Wem Town Hall on Thursday March 16.

"This funny, poignant, and heart-warming show mixes poetry, storytelling, and music to tell the story of a local shop from 1919 to present day, telling the tales of the women that have made up the shop’s history and how the lives of women have changed over the last century.

"Written by Ruth E. Cockburn, Miss Nobodies was inspired the community of Great Harwood and some of the prominent female figures of Lancashire.

"One such woman is Ethel Carnie Holdsworth, a writer who worked in the mills in the early part of last century.

"She is cited as the UKs first working class, female novelist and extracts from her poetry are used throughout Miss Nobodies.

"This show covers themes of social responsibility, civic duty, and local pride, whilst touching on female solidarity. You may even be offered a sweet.
