THE organisers of a popular walking festival in Whitchurch have said they  are pleased with how it went.

The three-day Whitchurch Walking Festival was opened by Whitchurch Walkers along with the Whitchurch mayor Councillor Andy Hall and North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan on Friday, May 12 and it finished on Sunday, May 14.

The walking festival is in its 10th year and attracts people from across the county and further afield, with the routes showcasing some of the best walking routes in and around Whitchurch, taking people out to the heart of the Meres and the Mosses of north Shropshire.

Whitchurch Walkers member, Malcolm Monie said: "I think it was a resounding success.

"Everyone seems to have enjoyed it and had a good time. We could not have had better weather.

"Helen Morgan launched the event on Friday morning. She was very enthusiastic and very complimentary about what we are doing, so that is nice."

Malcolm mentioned that the festival receives people from outside north Shropshire and south Cheshire.

He said: "We have a group of people who come up from Surrey every year.

"It is a great way for people to meet each other and make new friends. We get people coming back.

"This year the group of four which came up from Surrey have become a group of six."

Malcolm also spoke about the significance of 2023 being in the group's 10th year.

He said: "It is quite a milestone and hopefully it will keep going into the future.

"It is a great event for both us and for the town.

"It brings people in from outside.

"We had support from Whitchurch Business Group and Whitchurch Town Council.

"Traders have come up with offers for people taking part in the festival."

Malcolm thanked all those involved for helping with the festival.

He said: "It is very much a team effort. It would happen without so many people from the membership and beyond."

Ms Morgan was pleased to officially open the event.

She added: "Shropshire has a fantastic array of walking routes, and our countryside is enormously important to our rural way of life.

"It was a pleasure to celebrate everything our part of the county has to offer and officially open Whitchurch Walking Festival this year.

"The Whitchurch Walkers should be very proud of running such a great event."
