WHITCHURCH town councillors will be asked to consider a verbal update from its town clerk over the latest information for plans to accommodate a driving test centre in the town.

Whitchurch has been without a test centre since the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) closed its town branch in Dodington, citing a lack of numbers.

However, after intervention from North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan, plus action from driving instructors across the area, the DVSA has since submitted plans for a centre to operate out of the Civic Centre, in High Street.

Town clerk Mike McDonald will update councillors, behind closed doors away from public and press, according to an agenda item for July’s full meeting on Thursday, July 20.

The item agenda reads: “To receive a verbal update from the proper officer in relation to the DVSA occupation of Whitchurch Civic Centre Facilities and consider a “Licence to Operate” following separate legal advice.”

OTHER NEWS:

The item is one of eight out of 18 agenda items that will be heard in private session – other issues include a recommendation for the provision of two solar lights in the Harry Richards Garden in Jubilee Park and one in the skatepark.

Other items heard in private include consideration and determination of ‘essential’ electrical works for the Civic Centre.

The chairman of the council’s culture and civic committee will also present to the council over recent stallholder representation for the Friday market, while also updating members over the heritage craft units behind the Civic Centre.

Whitchurch Herald:

A working party will also be created for any possible amendments and additions to the Whitchurch Place Plan before an August 7 deadline.

In the public session of the meeting, much of the agenda is dominated by procedural and administrative matters, such as the potential adoption of a biodiversity policy, contributions to the town and council parish survey and the council’s police panel.

The meeting starts at 7.15pm in the Edward German Room in the Civic Centre.
