A CRISIS group is due to be formed to tackle the RAAC issues surrounding Whitchurch's Civic Centre.

Whitchurch Town Council is expected to ratify the group, which will be made up of the mayor, councillors and the clerk, when it meets later today (Wednesday, October 18).

The creation of the Crisis Management Group comes after RAAC was discovered in the building just a few weeks ago and has since left some areas unusable.

OTHER NEWS:

RAAC is a lightweight, 'bubbly' form of concrete which was commonly used in construction between the 1950s and mid-1990s. However, it has since been linked to sudden failures.

A vote will also be held at the meeting to appoint another councillor to the group to ensure it is quorate.

The agenda item also states that confirmation is expected to be given to ensure its remit will be concerned with matters concerning or related to the Civic Centre and will be limited to the period around the current RAAC crisis.

The council will meet on Wednesday away from the Civic Centre because of the ongoing crisis surrounding the finding of RAAC in the building.

Councillors will meet on Wednesday at Bargates Hall, in Bargates, close to St Alkmund’s Church at 7.15pm.

There are a number of items in the meeting’s private session, which will be heard away from public and press.

Items in the private session include hearing a verbal update from the clerk, Mike McDonald, in relation to the Whitchurch Heritage Craft Units, while there will also be a verbal update from the personal committee.

Councillors will also be asked to consider a grant application from reserves and will also receive an update on the current status of the Civic Centre.
