A SHROPSHIRE councillor for Wem has assured residents he is in discussions with officers from the authority concerning a flooded road in the town.

Councillor Edward Towers, a former mayor of the town, says he was contacted by concerned residents through Wem Town Council about flooding in Church Lane from Soulton Road.

One resident, Shelagh Richardson, said that the road has flooded at least four times during autumn and winter.

However, Cllr Towers says he hopes that work is underway to improve flooding on the road.

He said: “I wrote to our head of drainage John Bellis and sent him some photographs and explained that this had been a problem for some time and could he ask one of his team to look into this matter.

“He replied very promptly and sent me a message.

“It said: ‘I’ve spoken to one of our drainage technicians on this one. They are aware of the issue which is being caused by an oak tree that has damaged our highway system.

“‘We need to re-direct this outfall around the tree and the technician is currently discussing this with landowners.

“’The water does gradually soak away over a period of time but during this extreme weather we've experienced lately the surrounding ditches and land is sodden so it's not gone as quick.

“’In the meantime we will see if we can get a tanker out there and if it’s feasible remove the remaining water to make it passable again’.”
