Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey visited Whitchurch to throw his support behind Helen Morgan.

Liberal Democrat candidate, Helen Morgan is hoping to keep her seat in the upcoming general election after dramatically winning it in a by election in 2021 after the resignation of former MP Owen Paterson after a lobbying scandal.

“Well so far the reception we have been getting on the doorstep has really been quite heartening,” said Mr Davey.

“People know Helen is their MP, is a Liberal Democrat and has done a fantastic job since winning in that by election.

“A lot of people who have previously voted Conservative at the by-election have said they have never known a local MP be so active, involved and engaged and representing the community so well.

“Whether it is on the health service or on agriculture, so many local issues Helen has championed in parliament – and got things done.”

Mr Davey was full of praise for Helen’s work, pointing to her work on a recent piece of legislation to guarantee that the standard of homes for soldiers and their families is up to an acceptable standard.

“I am here because I want to make sure we do win,” said Mr Davey. “Helen is a fantastic MP and I want to make sure she gets re-elected.”

Ms Morgan was happy with Mr Davey’s visit, to “have the leader here and to get the support from the party”.

“Today has been a whistle stop tour, we’ve had a great local reaction and the volunteers were pleased to see him as well,” said Ms Morgan.

“We have been getting ready so when the starting gun was fired we were ready to go.

“I think it would be a mistake to take a vote for granted in North Shropshire after what happened in the by-election so I won’t be taking anyone’s vote for granted and will be working really, really hard up until 10pm on polling day.”

As part of the visit Ms Morgan and Mr Davey visited Shropshire Flower Farm in Ash Parva, near Whitchurch which is a local floristry business based in part of a 100 acre farm that runs floristry workshops and provides wildflower arrangements for weddings.

This included a crash course in flower arrangement for the pair by owner Vicky Gilbert.

“It was surreal,” said Vicky. “I wasn’t sure what to expect with so many people here.

“I think it was brilliant that they decided to come here.”
