We asked the candidates in North Shropshire to set out what would be their top priorities if they were elected as your MP.
Ahead of the vote on July 4 the candidates gave their views on the local issues they wish to tackle.
Here are their responses in alphabetical order:
Conservative Party – Simon Baynes
My wife Maggie and I live in the village of Hordley, near Ellesmere. I went to school in Shropshire, as did our two children, and I ran a bookshop business in Shrewsbury.
My focus in politics has always been on community issues as a Councillor, Mayor of my town and MP for the constituency of Clwyd South, which has now been dissolved due to boundary changes.
My key priorities for North Shropshire are increased investment in the NHS and our roads, including fixing potholes, championing our farmers, delivering better public transport, backing local businesses and improving mobile and broadband coverage.
Green Party – Craig Emery
My priorities for North Shropshire are:
- Ensuring warm affordable Council housing across Shropshire
- Opposing various Shropshire Council plans such as North West Relief Road, closures of recycling centres & charging of garden waste
- Encouraging Green initiatives throughout North Shropshire to ensure stay on track to delivering Zero Carbon as soon as possible
- Working across political spectrum to support anything that brings/keeps services locally
- Supporting measures to relieve Cost of Living pressures for residents across North Shropshire
Independent, Sam Cladingbowl
This general election is a chance to make your voice heard. Our political parties promise lots but rarely deliver.
I am standing so that we can let politicians know that people matter more than party politics. Voting for me will show politicians that listening to our voices is more important than listening to party whips.
If elected, I would put the needs of the eldest and youngest in our communities first, mandating a 25 per cent increase in state pension and giving all primary pupils a free school meal. I support the NHS, action on climate change and our veterans.
Labour, Natalie Rowley
As a healthcare worker and parish councillor, I know how 14 years of Tory cuts have impacted on North Shropshire families. As MP, I will prioritise:
- Tackling the cost of living, switching on GB Energy, lowering bills, giving children the best start with additional teachers and free breakfast clubs.
- Cutting NHS waiting lists to ease pressure on under-resourced hospitals through more appointments at evenings and weekends, recruiting NHS mental health staff, and rescuing dentistry.
- Improving connectivity for rural communities, upgrading broadband and giving local communities control over bus routes.
If you want change in North Shropshire, vote Labour.
Liberal Democrats, Helen Morgan
If elected, I will work hard to stand up for North Shropshire in Westminster and secure the services we need.
My key focus will be on improving local healthcare, strengthening transport links and upgrading our infrastructure, while always providing support for constituents.
Rural areas like North Shropshire have been taken for granted for far too long.
This is a fantastic county, and I hope I’ve already shown that having a vocal champion in Parliament gets results. Back me on the 4th of July to keep up the hard work and put Shropshire first.
Reform, Mark Whittle
Mr Whittle did not respond to our request for request for a comment to the voters but has previously said: “I am extremely passionate about North Shropshire and resolving the many issues that have been ignored for far too long in the constituency.”
