HUNDREDS of people packed into a Whitchurch pub last week to watch on for the second year of the town’s Poetry Slam.

Poetry Whitchurch held its second ‘Slam’ on Monday, August 19 at Percy's Café Bar with 15 poets – some local and others from much further afield – competing in front of a packed audience.

Gareth Von Dinther, Trustee for Poetry Whitchurch, praised all those who took part in the competition and said it was an incredibly high standard.

He added: “The evening was a showcase of incredible talent, with poets ranging from first-time slam attendees to seasoned veterans.

“The performances were scored by judges from local community group and Sir John Talbot’s School, but also with an added twist: a 'clapometer' to measure the audience's reaction, making the competition even more thrilling.

“The event featured a great mix of humour and depth, with plenty of laughter from the clever wordplay, and heartfelt applause for the more profound messages shared.

“After five heats, the winner of each heat advanced to the final round, where they performed another poem.

“In the end, it was Morgan Birch who captivated both the judges and the audience, earning the title of Slam winner for 2024.

“The trustees of Poetry Whitchurch extend their sincere thanks to all the poets who participated, the wonderful judges, the enthusiastic audience, and the fantastic team at Percy's Café Bar for hosting the event.

“We look forward to holding another Slam in 2025.”

For those interested in joining the group for future events, such as Open Mic nights (both in-person and online), seminars, and development groups, contact them through their Facebook page.

Gareth added: “We have a great Online Open Mic event on Monday, September 16 at 8pm with the incredible guest poet Olga Dermott-Bond that is a great opportunity for people to enjoy some fantastic poetry and maybe share some of their own work too.

Morgan Birch added: “What a great slam – it was a brilliant quirky venue, a diverse range of talent, thoughtful judging, responsive audience, and kind and encouraging MC-ing.

“It all added up to a wonderful atmosphere and a truly memorable event.

“Well done to all concerned.”

One performer, Lateral G, added: “Lovely night. Congratulations Morgan and well done to everyone involved.
