A WHITCHURCH man will be sentenced next week for two drug dealing offences - but must wait to be sentenced on a third charge.

Wing Chan, also known as Brendan Chan, of Burford Way in Whitchurch, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Thursday, September 5.

Judge John Butterfield KC was faced with prosecution barrister Kevin Jones as well as two barristers for the defence in Birmingham-based Saleema Mahmood and Manchester-based Rushnay Sikander.

Mr Jones told the court that the defendant was facing sentencing for three separate cases having pleaded guilty on a solo indictment in July where he admitted being concerned in the supply of cocaine and possession with intent to supply cannabis.

The 25-year-old also admitted to driving while disqualified.

Mr Jones also told the judge that a separate offence from a court in Manchester had also been transferred to Shrewsbury and would require a sentencing date.

A further obstacle for the case was that both Miss Mahmood and Miss Sikander were claiming representation for the defendant.

The two barristers sought a decision from Judge Butterfield on who would be best to represent him after two firms had been instructed for Chan.

Miss Mahmood, instructed by Haleys in Birmingham, said they had represented him from the outset whereas Miss Sikander, instructed by Gatsby Law in Manchester, said that the firm had been personally instructed by the defendant.

However, Judge Butterfield said that he ‘wasn’t prepared to make that decision’ but did agree that Chan should be sentenced for the two solo indictments immediately.

This means he will return to Shrewsbury Crown Court on Wednesday, September 11 to be sentenced.

Judge Butterfield added that he expected representation issues to be resolved.

Chan was remanded in custody until his appearance next week.
