A former teacher's string of legal claims against Ellesmere College have been dismissed by an employment tribunal.

The case brought forward by former teach Aldona Done made claims including of discrimination, harassment and victimisation based on a disability were dismissed by the court.

She also made claims based on public interest disclosure detriment which was also dismissed. Ms Done also withdrew claims regarding trade union victimisation.

As part of her eight claims against the college, Ms Done said she suffered from an eating disorder - which is classed as a disability - and that her employers at the college would have been aware of this.

The private school denied it was aware until an occupational health report in July 2022 and claimed she had actively hidden it from the school and that she was not treated less favourably.

Ms Done, who worked as a maths teacher and house mistress, alleged that she raised concerns “that the house was not a good environment as she was dealing with girls with mental health issues, self-harming, suicide attempts” and “told the senior management team that she needed more support and that her mental health was deteriorating”.

However, her claims were not found to cross the legal threshold in part due to evidence presented from a separate occupational health report as well as evidence presented by other members of staff.

A spokesperson from Ellesmere College said: “Ellesmere College confirms the conclusion of the recent tribunal hearing involving a former employee. We recognise and appreciate the thoroughness and impartiality demonstrated throughout the legal process.

“The tribunal’s decision, which was in our favour, across all claims that were brought against the College, brings to a close a matter that has demanded careful consideration and extensive review.

“We respect the tribunal's diligent efforts in ensuring that all aspects were comprehensively evaluated and that a fair conclusion was reached.

“We are pleased that this process is now complete and remain committed to maintaining a transparent and respectful work environment for all our employees.”
