HUNDREDS of pounds raised for charity and a memorial bench unveiled in memory of a former member were the highlights of a Whitchurch bowling club’s President’s Day.

Whitchurch District Club, in St John’s Park, held the big celebration on Saturday, September 7, with members taking part in a number of competitions.

But the day was also marked by a hugely generous gift to the club from the family of Alan Molyneux, with his wife June and family there to hand over the bench.

Club president David Hiles was delighted with how the celebrations went and thanked all those who helped make the day special.

He said: “My very many thanks to all members and friends, who came and enjoyed Presidents/Ladies Day at the District Club on Saturday, September 7.

“A mixed round robin bowling competition with 20 pairs competing, played a round robin bowling competition – brilliantly organised by Janice Broad – the winners were Richard Evans and Dave Downward (who should have been wearing a skirt).

“Around 25 people took part in the treasure hunt and quiz; the treasure hunt was won by Sam Plant and the quiz winners were Jane Angel and Heather Dulson, Emma Broad and Aaron Molyneux.

“All of these competitions were superbly organised by Jane and Chas Bebbington.

“More than 60 members joined the President for Afternoon Tea, with a glass of bubbles included, which was superbly supplied by one of our newest members Caroline Hollins.

“My thanks to David Fisher and Pat Paddington, chairmen of house and social respectively, for organising the event, and to Eddie and Emma Broad who gave up their ‘Holy Grail’ – their Wrexham home tickets – to assist and support the event.

“Lastly to Yvonne Sheridan, who ran the bar and looked after us all throughout the day.

“A bench kindly donated by June Molyneux and family was unveiled on the front green in memory of her beloved husband and former member Alan.
