A business founded by a Shropshire couple has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Soldiering On Awards 2024.

Andrew and Lorraine Laverton, founders of We Are Bert Ltd, have been shortlisted as one of three finalists in the Business Start-Up Award category.

The awards, which aim to recognise achievement in the Armed Forces community, will take place at a black-tie ceremony at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in two weeks, hosted by broadcaster Jeremy Vine.

The winner will be announced on October 16.

We Are Bert Ltd was founded in 2022 after Andrew, a veteran, started creating robot sculptures from scrap to help with his mental health.

The business is now an online retail outlet for 'The Berts' and the inspiration for a children's book by Lorraine.

The Soldiering On Awards are in their 14th year and have 12 categories recognising serving personnel, veterans, and family members.

The awards are supported by the MOD, military charities, and corporate partners.

The finalists were chosen by a panel of judges from a large number of nominees, selecting 36 finalists across all categories.

They were celebrated at a private reception at the House of Lords in July.

Lt Col Ren Kapur MBE, chief executive officer of the Soldiering On Awards, said: "Year after year, the individuals and organisations nominated for the Soldiering On Awards never cease to inspire, which makes shortlisting finalists an incredibly challenging task.

"The awards are crucial for spotlighting remarkable stories and ensuring inspirational achievements receive both local and national recognition."
