THE history of the Vikings in Britain will be the subject of the Wem Civic Society talk next week.

Historian and author Sandy Leong will be appearing via Zoom and projected onto the big screen at Wem Town Hall on Tuesday, October 15 to give the talk titled ‘From the Fury of the Vikings’.

A Wem Civic Society Spokesman set out how the talk will explain the Vikings’ true origins on the British Isles.

They said: “For 300 years, the Vikings took the northern world by storm in search of land, slaves, gold and silver.

“The speed and daring of the Vikings was legendary – Christian monks wrote with horror about violent raids on monasteries and towns.

“The raid on Lindisfarne in 793 was thought to mark the beginning of the Viking Age.

“Come and find out about when the Vikings came to England and what they got up to. The Viking story is one of raiding, trading, exploring and settling.

“Sandy is an historian, who specialises in the Tudor and Viking periods.

“She loves to bring to life the sort of history that doesn’t get into the mainstream history books in a light-hearted way.

“She is a professional speaker, and published author spending time living and working in the UK and Malaysia.”

The talk will be delivered via Zoom on the Town Hall’s cinema screen.

The speaker will take questions at the end of the talk as normal. Non-members are welcome to come to the meeting; there is a £2.50 entry fee.
