Plans to install 239 solar panels on the roof of Wem’s only supermarket are currently with Shropshire Council.
Co-op, in the main car park in Wem, is seeking planning approval to place hundreds of panels on its south and south-west pitched roof and is seeking to discover whether planning permission would be required.
The prior approval application was submitted on Friday, October 9 and was made by Big Solar Cooperative on behalf of the company.
A statement submitted with the application form said: “Installation of 239 solar panels, fitted fixed flush to the existing south and south west pitched roof surfaces, projecting no more than 200mm from the roof slope.

“All panels to be located a minimum of 1,000mm from external roof edges. Installation to be completed in line with permitted development requirements for non-domestic buildings.
“Cabling to be run underneath the panels, inverters and ancillary equipment to be mounted internally. Installed solar panels will be black-framed and have anti-reflective surface treatment, details of which are attached to this application.

“The existing roof surface is a light grey colour and will be covered by the darker, anti-reflective glass of the solar PV panels as such we do not anticipate any glint and glare issues at this site.”
A decision is expected on whether prior approval would be acceptable is expected on Wednesday, December 4.
A chart submitted with the application set that out the panels, in high summer, could generate between 14-15,000 KWh of energy.
