YOUNG scouts were given a taste of history this week when they visited Sleap airfield, near Wem, to meet the son of a Polish war pilot.

The 2nd Whitchurch Beaver Scouts visited the airfield, which was a former RAF base during the Second World War, on Sunday, November 17.

Gregg Cooper, from the Scouts, said the youngsters were treated to a close-up to planes before speaking to John Wojda, son of Polish air pilot Adam, who played a special role in helping the Scouts complete a project.

Gregg said: “On Sunday, November 17 the 2nd Whitchurch Beaver Scouts, visited Sleap Aerodrome, a Second World War airfield.

“We met John Wojda, a Whitchurch businessman whose father Zbigniew ‘Adam’ Wojda escaped Nazi-occupied Poland and joined the RAF and flew spitfires.

“After the war Adam open a jewellers and clock repair shop in Whitchurch which is still in the town, but he also became a flight instructor at Sleap aerodrome.

“The scouts were shown round the museum and the many relics of Second World War planes as well as Adam's RAF uniform.

“The beaver scouts were allowed to get up close to a plane and shown the controls and how a plane flies.

“This was the final part of the scouts work towards their flight badge and John presented the Beaver Scouts with their badges at the end of the visit.”
