WHITCHURCH will hit half-a-century of taking Father Christmas to the streets when the Rotary Club starts its fundraising drive next month.
Santa Claus will be driven to streets around the town and villages to mark the start of Christmas and is about to make history with his 50th-anniversary tour of the Whitchurch area.
Graham King, from Whitchurch Rotary Club, said the club was delighted to reach 50 years of taking the big man to children and said he hoped this would be a bumper year for raising funds.

He said: “What has now become one of the town’s best-loved Rotary initiatives began in the dry winter of 1975 when the then president, Vincent Bradbury, launched a modest idea that has since grown into a major annual community feature.
“This year’s tour begins on Monday, December 2, when Santa is driven around housing estates in Whitchurch and Dodington in a familiar float drawn behind a vehicle loaned by DA Roberts Fuels at Grindley Brook.
“After that, the ‘half century’ tour will set out on a further 13 weekday evenings, between 5pm and 9pm, covering other Whitchurch areas as well as Malpas, Ash, Ightfield, Calverhall, No-Mans-Heath, Prees, Higher Heath and Tilstock.
“In addition there will be five public appearances at local events, including an Alport football match on Saturday, December 21, and stops in the town centre.”
