A PENSIONER who caused the death of a man near Whitchurch has avoided jail after the prosecution accepted a plea to a lesser offence.
Elizabeth Pass, 77 and from Kidsgrove in Stoke-on-Trent, stood trial at Shrewsbury Crown Court this week accused of causing the death of Paul Hart on the A49 near Prees Heath in May 2023 by driving her Honda Jazz vehicle dangerously.
She pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving on January 16 this year but prosecutors proceeded to trial for a more serious charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
However, the Crown accepted an application from the defence at trial for no case to answer which was accepted.
The court confirmed that Pass was sentenced to 18 weeks, suspended for 12 months, and was disqualified from driving for three years.
