WOMEN rugby players in Whitchurch are ready and raring to go ahead of their new season.
The town's rugby club are excited about the new season with their seniors already winning their matches, and their minis and juniors growing on Sunday mornings when they practice from 9.15am
And this season they have welcomed girls of all ages on to their pitches with the ladies team and girls teams.
Alec Robinson who helps train the girls said: "We started with more than 50 girls aged from eight to 18 back in the summer. With holidays and Covid, and in some cases the weather, we’ve lost a few of our players, but now we’re back in a new season and ready to hit the ground running.
"Some girls are desperate to play contact but aren’t old enough as in the case of my own daughter and some girls might never want to play contact, but they need not worry as we’re used to taking things at their pace."
The club have a few girls teams that they could eventually play in but they’re not quite at that point yet as the coaches have said that their players' safety is of paramount importance.
The club also have a fledgling ladies team made up of some people who have played and others who haven’t held a ball.
Rosie Edwards said: "The friends I made on the pitch have become life long friends and we’re still very close having watched our children grow up together.
"Rugby isn’t just about playing games but about keeping fit, meeting people and most of all having fun with cake and sometimes gin.
"We have already had a couple of socials and the ladies who are training look forward to coming each week to just forget everything else and concentrate on themselves for once which is what we all need after the last 18 months."
The club is going from strength to strength but they would still love to invite you to come and have fun on a Tuesday with the girls (ages nine to 17) from 6pm to 7pm and the ladies on Wednesday between 7pm and 8pm where they have their own dedicated fitness instructor Simon Williams.
To get more information please contact the club Facebook page or come along to tag rugby on Friday nights from 7.30pm – all abilities welcome.
